Our Journey

MECC Trust began as a simple idea—to create a space where minority ethnic communities could come together, feel seen, and make a meaningful difference in their local area.

Founded by a small group of passionate volunteers, MECC started with community meet-ups and open conversations about what was missing in the neighbourhood.

Over time, those conversations turned into action, leading to projects that brought people together and strengthened community bonds.

From planting trees in local parks to organising cultural events and creative initiatives, MECC Trust has always focused on unity, inclusion, and positive change.

What began with just a handful of volunteers has grown into a vibrant team of community leaders, creatives, and changemakers, all working toward one shared goal—building stronger, more connected communities.

Our Mission

MECC Trust is dedicated to tackling social injustice in all its forms by empowering the diverse communities of Balsall Heath and the greater Birmingham area. Since its founding in 1979, the organisation has worked to address the root causes of inequality through practical support, education, and strong community advocacy.

We focus on improving health, financial stability, and social inclusion by delivering tailored services such as benefits advice, energy support, and wellbeing programmes. Our approach is centred on building resilience, strengthening community cohesion, and enabling individuals and families to achieve greater independence.

Through collaboration, innovation, and compassion, MECC Trust strives to create lasting positive change and build a fairer society where everyone has the opportunity to reach their full potential.

Mr Safdar Butt

Mecc Trust was first established in 1979 by Mr Safdar Butt or better known as Mr Butt or Uncle Butt.

"He was one of the members of community that that we could all rely on no matter your background, ethnicity or age he would always be there for you"

He was well known within the Balsall Heath community for his ambtions to unite and help those within the community as well as his loving and approachable personality

"Uncle Butt was an amazing person the type you could speak to as if you've known him your whole life"

His legacy now lives through Mecc Trust and we wish to always be able to uphold his morals through everything we do and achieve as a community

"Mr Butt always helped out whenever there was an issue to be dealt with no matter how he'd always find a way to sort it out"
