Let’s answer the BIG question: What is Retrofit?

Retrofitting is the process of upgrading or modifying existing buildings with modern technology and improved features to enhance energy efficiency and reduce environmental impact. Rather than constructing new buildings, retrofit focuses on improving what already exists to make it more sustainable, comfortable, and cost-effective for occupants.

This can include adding insulation, upgrading heating systems, installing renewable energy solutions such as solar panels, and improving ventilation. The goal of retrofit is to lower energy consumption, reduce carbon emissions, and create healthier living and working environments while helping residents save money on their energy bills.

Our New Retrofitted Building

MECC Trust’s building is the first in Birmingham to undergo an exciting transformation from a traditional community space into a fully functional Retrofit Demonstrator. As part of our commitment to sustainability and community education, the building has been upgraded with energy-efficient solutions to show how older homes and buildings can be adapted for a greener future.

Soon to be open to the public, this space will act as an interactive learning hub, offering hands-on insight into retrofitting—from insulation and ventilation to modern energy-saving technologies. Visitors will be able to explore practical upgrades, ask questions, and see real examples of improvements in action.

Our goal is to empower the community to make informed decisions about their own homes by breaking down the barriers to sustainable living. Whether you are a homeowner, tenant, or simply curious about retrofitting, MECC’s Retrofit Demonstrator is here to spark ideas, inspire change, and lead the way toward a more energy-conscious future.
